Burundi plan to build HV transmission line to connect the Congo (DRC) Hydropower


Burundi Energy Minister recently said that Burundi will build a cross-border power transmission line connecting the neighboring Congo (DRC) Ruzizi hydropower station, which will ease power shortages in Burundi.

The 220kv transmission lines up to 78 km and cost about 53.6 billion Francs (about 220 million yuan), about 25km far from the northern capital Bujumbura. The transmission line project will get Loans of African Development Bank 26 billion Francs (about 107 million yuan) and German Reconstruction Bank for 27 billion Francs (about 110 million yuan) loan.

In additional, the Burundi government will provide 600 million Francs (about 2.46 million yuan) subsidy for the land owner as land acquisition costs .

Ruzizi hydropower station is located on the Congo (DRC) and Burundi border Ruzizi River, approximately 147 MW of installed capacity, supported by the EU Africa Infrastructure Trust Fund.
